Girl Power

August 18, 2011

Growing up, I was obsessed with the Spice Girls. You remember them — the most famous girl band in pop music history? I had all their CDs, watched the Spice World movie on end, and even bought a pair of platform sneakers to traipse around in while I sang “Wannabe” into the end of my hairbrush. As I got older (and the group broke up), I moved on to indulge in other shows that portrayed kick-ass female heroines. Topping the list was, of course, Charlie’s Angels (the Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz remakes), followed by a now-cancelled TV drama called “She Spies”, and a silly after-school cartoon called “Totally Spies”.

Yep, I’m all for girl power! So after reading No One Lives Twice by Julie Moffett, I knew that the heroine, Lexi, had earned a spot on my kick-ass she-spy list. Sure, she’s a bit clumsy and a total novice, but her determination is top-notch. Plus, she has not one, but two men — two hot men — vying after her in the story! This just goes to show that you don’t have to wear tight and revealing clothes to represent girl power. Although, a cute pair of shoes never hurt… unless they double as a weapon, that is.
